Segments and powertrains

Where electrified options exist, and where buyers still have only a gas engine to choose from.

Powertrain offerings by segment

Each cell counts offerings: one model sold with one powertrain. A model sold as both gas and hybrid is two offerings, one in each column, so total offerings is larger than the number of distinct models (nameplates), shown for reference.

How availability has changed

Nameplates offered with each powertrain, by model year, from every vehicle certified by the EPA since 2000.

Nameplates by powertrain, model years 2000–2026

A nameplate offered with several powertrains counts in each. Crossovers and SUVs are combined because EPA's classes don't separate them. Extended-range EVs certify as plug-in hybrids; hydrogen models (one to three a year since 2014) are in the data table only.

U.S. EPA fuel economy data, model years 2000–2026; ultra-luxury and exotic brands excluded. 119 nameplate-years missing from EPA's file between two certified years are filled in. MY2026 counts can still rise as late certifications are added; MY2027 is still being certified and is not shown.

Segments counts models (nameplates): each model once. Powertrain offerings counts each model once per powertrain it is sold with, so a model offered as gas and hybrid is two offerings.

Every model, every trim

Filter by brand, segment or powertrain. Low, mid and high are the lowest, median and highest base MSRP across the nameplate's trims (for the selected powertrains). Click a row for its full trim list.

Base MSRP excluding destination and options as of 2026-11-02. Sources, in order of preference: the automaker's own website (82% of prices), a dealer's window sticker (0%), then third-party pricing guides and articles (18%). Each trim shows its source.

Show sources and methodology

The list of nameplates and the powertrains each is certified with start from the U.S. EPA's fuel economy data for model years 2026 and 2027. Trims and prices come first from each automaker's own U.S. website (model, trim-comparison and build-and-price pages, or its pricing releases); where an automaker does not show a trim's price, from the base price on a franchised dealer's window sticker; and only then from third-party pricing guides and articles. Each trim's source is shown and linked in the explorer. Heavy-duty pickups and commercial vans, which EPA does not test, were added from automaker pricing.

  • Prices are base MSRP for each trim's lowest-priced configuration, excluding destination, options, taxes and incentives. Where a trim offers a second powertrain as an option, that powertrain is listed as its own row at the trim price plus the option price.
  • Powertrains: mild hybrids use a 48-volt or belt-driven motor that assists the engine but cannot move the vehicle on electricity alone; full hybrids can; plug-in hybrids can be charged and the engine can drive the wheels; extended-range EVs (EREV) are driven only by electric motors, with an engine that generates electricity.
  • Segments: SUVs are body-on-frame, truck-based vehicles, plus electric SUVs that share their platform with a pickup (Rivian R1S, GMC Hummer EV SUV, Cadillac Escalade IQ); crossovers are other SUV-shaped vehicles on a unibody or EV platform, of any size. Commercial vans include cargo and passenger vans; cutaways and chassis cabs are excluded.
  • Counts are nameplates on sale; "announced" models have been officially announced for the U.S. but are not yet on sale. Ultra-luxury and exotic brands (Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, McLaren and Rolls-Royce) are excluded.
  • Automakers change prices during the model year. Figures are as of the research date shown and are for general information only.
